Trellis Scotland

The Binks Hub Co-Director, Dr. Autumn Roesch-Marsh, began collaborating with Trellis Scotland in 2023 when they reached out for some support to write up their evaluation of the Birkhill Dye Garden project for peer review. This was an initiative exploring gardening and art-making as forms of care for women with lived experiences of sexual violence. Since then, this partnership has grown to include connections with REALITIES, the Yellow Tulip Project, and Universitas 21, creating a vibrant network of research and practice.

Key outputs from this collaboration include:

  • A peer-reviewed journal article co-authored by Autumn Roesch-Marsh, Emma Martindale (Trellis Scotland), and Lara Armitage and Sunshine Stewart (Birkhill House) entitled The Natural Dye Garden: Growth and Recovery from Sexual Violence Through Gardening and Craft.
  • Two MSc Dissertation project, one examining Social and Therapeutic Horticulture (STH) as an emerging profession and the other around STH and its role in supporting the mental health of older adults in residential care.
  • Ongoing collaboration on the course Creative Social Work and the Arts.
  • Numerous presentations within and beyond the University of Edinburgh, including an input at the BASW national conference, an input to the U21 social work conference on community social work, and a seminar co-hosted by the Binks Hub and REALITIES in October 2025 entitled “Planetary Health is Public Health: Reimagining the Future Together.”

Looking ahead, future work will explore the integration of STH into general practice and broader health and wellbeing contexts.

Natural Dye Garden at Birkhill House

Funded in 2022, this innovative programme brought together experts from the University of Edinburgh, Trellis Scotland, and Birkhill House to create a natural dye garden. Women participating in the programme planned, cultivated, harvested and transformed plants into art, combining social and therapeutic horticulture, green prescribing and arts-based social work.
